Chapter 8 - Through The Fog


As I stare into the foggy mirror I see the madness behind my eyes. Ashley see's it too as she floats behind staring over my shoulder. She leans in and gently kisses my cheek. I just float there with my fins on the vanity staring at myself in the mirror. I try, but I just can not grasp what has happened. I'm confused, angered, heartbroken to say the least. I'm just floating there in silence staring at my own reflection. "What do we do snow Sharky" Ashley breaks the silence in a soft and weary tone. After a long pause I finally reply, "I don't know hun, I just don't know". I turn to her and give her a hug. Suddenly there's a soft knock at the bathroom door. The voice on the other side is Mallet's, "You okay Sharky?", "Yeah, I'm fine Mallet, I'll be out in a minute, alright?", "Yeah alright Sharky". I can hear Mallet tell someone that they'll have to wait or call back.

Mallet seems frustrated, I can her it in his voice. A few seconds later, his voice lowers as he whispers something to Melina, "Don't worry baby, I'll go find out what's going on okay?", "You just take your time and get dressed". She kisses me on my cheek one more time and swims off out the door. I slowly turn back to the evil reflection staring at me through the mirror. "What and the hells goin on Sharky?" I say to myself as I bury my head in my fins with my elbows on the counter. "Baby...There's someone on the phone I think you should talk to, okay?" Ashley softly says from the other side of the bathroom door. I quickly finish getting dressed and open the door to see my two friends and my girlfriend standing there all puffy eyed and red nosed.

Mallet, with outstretched fins holds the phone out to me. I just stare at him blankly without saying a word, Mallet thrusts the phone toward me again. I slowly reach out and take it from his fin, and without breaking eye contact with him I raise it to my ear. "Hello" I finally say in a dazed and confused like manor. "Who's this"? "Hello, is this Sharky?" a deep raspy voice replies. "Yeah, this is Sharky, who's this?" I asked wearily. "This is detective Mackerel McKaskel of the Sharky City Police Department. I've been trying to reach you for hours son." "Yeah I bet you have" I say in a sarcastic tone. "Listen Sharky, I'm sure by now you know what has happened and I'd like to say that I'm extremely sorry for your loss son. Now" the raspy voice continued, "With that said, let me get down to business. I need to speak with you right away son, so why don't you tell me where your at and I'll come pick you up and..." "What do you mean come pick me up" I blurt in to the phone cutting the detective off. "Well" he continued. "You need to come down to the station and tal..." "Why don't you stop calling me Son!" I scream in to the phone furiously. "My dad is dead you son of a bitch, so cut the bullshark shit out okay". Ashley, Mallet, and Melina all look at each other with fear in their eyes as the chills run up and down their spines. "I...I...I'm sorry Sharky" a surprised McKaskel eventually answers. "I didn't realize what I was saying, it's force of habit ya know. It won't happen again I assure you. Now can I come and pick you..." "I'll be there in 20 mintues McKaskel, be ready for me" I say forcefully as I hang up the phone.

Without saying a word I swam toward the front door and grabbed Melina's car keys off the hook in the hall as I pass. I'm halfway out the door before Ashley belts out "I love you Sharky". I stop and turn, Mallet and Melina just look toward the floor. I lock eyes with Ashley, she looks terrified. I blow her a kiss off my fin and say "I love you more", I let the door slam behind me as I leave. I was right this morning while we waiting for the cab, Today would have been a good day to sleep off this hangover I know I have, but just can not feel yet.

The weather is crappy and the currents are cold and murky. I pulled my hood over my head as I swam down the steps toward Melina's car. I take a deep breath before I turn the ignition to try and clear my thoughts. "Okay Sharky" I say out loud to myself. "Keep your cool man, just keep your cool". I turn the ignition and BAM!!! I'm instantly brought right back to the snapping point, Melina's stereo is almost full blast and it is blaring country music in my ear. I jump and I punch the radio just hard enough to not break it. I quickly turn it off and crack half a smile as my heart slows back down to normal speed. I envision Ashley and Melina bobbing and singing away as they drive aimlessly around the reef. I compose myself and back down the drive. I look toward the house as I slowly drive away. In the window I see Ashley blowing me kisses. I blow one back as she disappears from my sight. On the way to the police station my mind begins to run away with a thousand thoughts like what, who, why, and how. All the questions of a confused Shark. All I know is this Detective McKaskel better have some answers for me when I get there or there's going to be hell to pay.
