Sharkys Life - Then and Now

Sharky was born into a middle class family in Harlem. He was an only child and he meant the world to his parents. His mom and dad spent a lot of time with him and taught him all that they could. They were a close knit family and Sharky always showed the utmost respect for them. Sharky’s dad was a bank manager and worked hard so that Sharky could have a good life. Sharky’s mother was at home looking after him, taking him to the park, always there for him when he was sick and she helped him with his school work as well. His father took him to baseball every time there was a game and put Sharky in a minor baseball league. Often, his father also took him to an arcade where he had fond memories of playing wide range video games with his dad.

Life was going pretty well for young Sharky until one dark Sunday morning. The family was walking back home from church, as their house was very close by, when a jet black SUV reared around a corner. Instantly, two men standing a few feet away from them, whipped out their guns and a barrage of bullets came at them from the car. Fearlessly, Sharky’s dad stepped in front of his son and wife. From his obstructed view Sharky saw the two men near them fall, bloodied, to the ground, but then in horror, watched as his parents crumbled to the ground, riddled with bullets. Unable to take in what had happened he looked around searching for someone. The black SUV had sped off, the street was deserted and all he could hear was the distant wail of police sirens in the background. He watched in disbelief as the police cordoned off the block and the ambulance crews shook their heads and wrapped up the four dead bodies in body bags. It then dawned upon him; at the age of ten that he, Sharky was an orphan. Sharky being still a child did not really comprehend what had happened and the next thing he knew he was taken to a social worker’s home and told that as he had no family he would have to live with another new family who was willing to take him in. They would be his new parents and he would even have two brothers to play with. Sharky was a little excited at the prospect of having brothers however life at the foster home proved to be very difficult for Sharky. His foster parents and their boys treated Sharky very badly. Sharky was made to do a lot of chores in addition to completing the homework that was assigned to the children in whose home he lived in.

At that tender age of ten, still very much disturbed and distraught at the loss of his parents Sharky was very confused and depressed by what was happening to him. The children continually beat him up and his grief from his parent’s death soon manifested into anger. He began to grow very reserved and tended not to socialize very much. At first he did not try and fight back, but the older boys took advantage of his inaction. Almost every day, he would receive numerous bruises but as time passed by he grew tougher and began to work out at night when everyone else was asleep. He used his anger to keep pushing himself, and one day when it was just two boys that tried to beat him, he fought back. He used all the power that he could and was able to break one of their noses and even knocked one unconscious. Almost, immediately the authorities at the home had him sent away to another stricter foster home at the young age of thirteen. Sharky felt no remorse for the two kids; he even felt that they deserved worse.

At his new foster home nobody messed with him and he kept to himself. Life there was very confined and restricted. It was almost like a prison. At school Sharky, despite being a fast learner was not very focused and so he did not do very well. He stayed at the foster home till he was 16 and then he did what he had wanted to do for a long time and ran away. He just wasn’t able to take the monotony and restrictive lifestyle there. Sharky also dropped out of school and soon joined a gang on the streets. For the first time since he was ten Sharky felt accepted and soon got to know many others in his gang. He never imagined that he would be living a street life but on the other hand Sharky felt very comfortable in it. Since he was quite strong he was given the job as an enforcer. This was mainly due to the fact that the mob boss, Desmond, liked Sharky and saw a lot of potential for him.

Sharky had a lot of hate built up inside him and so the violence of the gang worked well for him. Despite the fact that his parents were killed by gang members he tried as best as he could not to think about his past. He started off collecting debts with his partner and for the most part people paid up. A couple of years later Desmond felt that Sharky was ready to collect debts on his own. During the first few collections that Sharky made people tried to take advantage of him since he was just one man. Sharky proved that he was up to the task by easily overcoming anyone that stood in his way. Desmond was very pleased with him and then decided to take Sharky under his wing. The boss taught Sharky all about the gang was and how it was run. They grew very close and Sharky even looked up to him as father figure. He stayed an enforcer until he was 25 at which point Desmond had a serious talk with Sharky. He told Sharky that he really trusted him and that he believed he could do more for the gang.

At first, Sharky was hesitant as not only had he never actually killed a person before, but also because of the manner in which his parents died. It was just because of gang member killing each other that their lives were lost, through no fault of their own. He contemplated on his decision for a long time and then he made up his mind to do it, but he made a promise to himself and explicitly told his boss that he would not kill any innocent people. When he began work he didn’t want to just charge in and kill people in broad daylight. He wanted to be different. His first target was a drug dealer called Ricky that dealt on his gang’s turf, who wouldn’t leave despite several warnings. Sharky was very professional about what he was going to do even though he was a novice at it. He followed the dealer and learnt his habits from afar. Day after day he made note of the places that Ricky frequented and deduced that the best time to strike was late on Friday night when Ricky visited a movie theater, often alone.

When the day came Sharky walked into a movie theater that was for the most part empty. Taking a seat directly behind him he waited for the explosion onscreen that he knew would come fifteen minutes after the movie began. When the explosion came, so did two bullets into the back of the dealers head. As Sharky walked out the door he stuck to the shadows and made sure no one saw or heard him. The next day the police had no idea how the man was murdered and Sharky was pleased for he knew he had accomplished his mission while maintaining the secrecy of himself and his gang. In this professional manner he carried out all of his future hits and soon he was one of the most feared men in Harlem. It was there that he created the alias Sharky. Only those in his crime family knew his true identity. To the outside world, they only knew the name Sharky and they feared it immensely.

Whenever the police found a murder scene with no evidence they knew it was Sharky, he was just that perfect in his work, leaving neither clues nor evidence for the police. Unfortunately for Sharky, not everyone in his gang had his expertise and soon one of the lower members of the crime family was caught. The police knew that this was the chance they were waiting for and told him that they would give him a reduced sentence if he revealed Sharky’s identity. Being the coward that he was, he gave in and poured out all of Sharky’s hits to the police. He also told them of Sharky’s whereabouts and soon, the police had Sharky arrested and tried him in court. With the amount of evidence that the police had, they were successful in proving that Sharky was guilty and he was sentenced to 25 years in a maximum security prison.

His crime family was outraged at this and within days of Sharky’s sentence the snitch that ratted on Sharky died of heart complications. At least that was the story in the newspaper. The police knew how well Sharky was connected and how well he was respected by his family and so it was no surprise to them when they found the snitch’s heart complications to be three bullets, assumed to be shot at point blank range into his heart followed by a dozen bullets spread throughout his torso.

Jail was the turning point in Sharky’s life. When he got there he saw so many other criminals like himself and wondered if this was what he had accomplished in life. Meeting with priests and psychiatrist and being an intelligent man himself, he began to reflect on his past and the life he had led. He realized that even though he had led such a troubled lifestyle as a child, it did not justify a life of crime. He saw he was no different from the men who accidentally took the lives of his parents and for the first time, began to think of what his parents would have wanted him to do. Even though he was only ten years old when his parents were killed he knew that they were good, honest people and that they would not approve of the life he had led so far. It was then that he resolved to turn over to a new leaf. He began to think of what he would do once he got out of prison and decided to study business.

Due to his good conduct in prison, he was easily able to enroll in the business courses that he wanted. He studied hard and was able to achieve good grades. Aside from studying he also focused a lot of his energy into working out. He established a methodical routine and with a lot of work built up his muscle. In his classes he was one of the best students achieving a near straight A average in all of his subjects. As the first year of his studies and exercise passed by he began to grow less reserved and began to get to know people. He started to get better at interacting with others and it was quite evident that he wanted to change. He began to dream about getting out of jail and starting his own business where he would make sure everything was perfect. He had no idea what kind of business he would start up, where or when he would do it but he knew that one day he would have a business to call his own. He would run it legally and not have to worry about the police or anyone else. When he got out of prison he would be a different. This helped deal with the issues he had experienced as a child and he grew less angry at the card that life had dealt him. He even began to view prison as an opportunity to set his life straight. For the first time since his parent’s death he felt that his life was going in the right direction. He also felt that if his parents were watching they would be proud of him.

For the next fifteen years he kept his mind and body busy by studying hard and working out. He never slacked off or lost sight of his goal for minute. After fifteen years had passed he had already obtained his business degree and could now apply for parole. It was evident to the prison authorities that he was a reformed man. The court hearing for his parole went extremely well, with all the guards giving him excellent reviews and Sharky explaining what he planned to do with his life. That combined with the excellent marks he had received in his business course made the judge more than willing to grant him parole. On January 10, 2005 he was granted parole and when he left prison he weighed 245 pounds compared to the 185 pounds that he walked in with. It wasn’t that he was fat, the 60 extra pounds were pure muscle and this combined with his and crime family’s reputation guaranteed that none of his past enemies would even come close to him. Sharky made sure that his crime family knew that he wanted no part in their life anymore after his parole was over and since they respected him so much they did not even try to convince him otherwise. He managed to get a job in a local video game arcade. Although his employer was hesitant at first since Sharky had such a menacing physique, Sharky soon proved him wrong.

He was always early to work and not only did his job efficiently but also undertook whatever other things that he could do in the store. The manager was overjoyed with Sharky’s work and made sure that his parole officer knew about it. Sharky maintained the machines and kept them as clean as possible. He also restocked the change machines and ticket dispensers. Soon he began to understand exactly how the machines worked and he got so good at fixing them that they would never be down for more than 20 minutes. While doing this job he kept as far away from street life as possible. He only spent money that he needed to and saved up the rest in a bank. He soon grew bored with his duties at the store and began to talk to the manger about some business strategies that he would like to implement. By this point his manager had confidence in him and listened to his ideas and implemented them. Sharky wanted to start an advertising campaign to get more customers to his store. He carefully decided when and where to advertise the store all while staying well within his budget. His campaign worked successfully and brought a lot more revenue to the company. He began to try out more of ideas and many of them were successful. It was around this time he decided that once he was off parole he would start an arcade of his own.

On January 10th 2008 he was released from parole and he stepped out a completely free man determined not to go back to past life, but instead to lead life as an honest and hardworking citizen. Nevertheless he was still feared by people around but still maintained a level of respect since he had changed into such a good person. He then began to focus his efforts on his new business. At first he realized that he would have to borrow a lot of money to start up his business and was very uncertain about it, but he soon discovered that the government would grant him money since he spent many years in an institution and wanted to become an entrepreneur. With the money problem solved he began to plan his business. He had no problem finding a place to set up his business in and on March 6th 2008 he opened Sharky Games. The arcade was very well set up as Sharky had gone over all the details and not overlooked a single one. He considered it to be perfect and was proud to be its owner. It had everything and more, laser tag, pinball machines, and multitude of arcade machines. He even managed to provide space for a ballroom for children and also a bumper car arena. In addition he had a mini food court that had a pizza and burger place of his own. Sharky did not leave the parents out of the mix; he got a Starbucks franchise in his food court so that the parents socialize while their children played. On his grand opening, Sharky’s Games was filled to the brim and while he could sense that people were still scared of him he knew that although his reputation would always follow him he would show all of them that he had changed. This hard work and determination combined with his prior experience with arcades ensured that Sharky’s Games would be very successful.

Sharky was very proud of his success but did not rest on his laurels, he is currently thinking of many new ideas to add to the arcade, games that will keep children engaged. Sharky worked hard to launch a website for Sharky’s arcade and you can visit Sharky anytime at his fabulous arcade, he even has made a free online arcade for everyone around the world everywhere to enjoy, www.sharkysgames.com.

Sharky hopes that he will fulfill his dream of having Sharky Games all over the country and would even like to go global. He would like to visit all the countries in the world and one day in the distant future, have Sharky games worldwide.
